Employment Practices Liability Insurance

Employee lawsuits are up 400 percent in the last 20 years; coverage isn’t just important, it’s necessary.

Protection from all angles.

Every day, small businesses face choices to make, sometimes very difficult ones. Even when made with the best of intentions and well within rights, these choices can be viewed by employees as wrong, and unfortunately may result in a lawsuit.

Employee practices liability insurance (EPLI) can protect companies in the case of an employee suing for any number of possible violations, including wrongful discipline, sexual harassment, violation of the Family and Medical Leave Act, and failure to promote, among many others. Having EPLI provides coverage in these instances, and protect a business from exposure due to these claims.

Who should get EPLI?

When considering cost, first think about potential legal fees. Cases dismissed in court cost an average of $15,000, and cases that are settled out of court average around $30,000. Cases that are successfully brought to trial cost a business on average $175,000.

In the case of employee practices liability Insurance, the annual premium is between $800 and $3,000, with an average of approximately $1,200, providing coverage ranging anywhere from $10,000 to $2 million.
